I saw this movie when I was 16 and I loved it. It still amazes me how good acting can get. There are very few movies where there are two actors this good. Anthony Hopkins is absolutely fabulous as Hannibal Lecter and Jodi Foster is perfect for her role as Starling. The way they interact is so bitter-sweet it's incredible. However, as good as the acting is, the feeling of their scenes together could not be achieved without the wonderful cinematography. When Lecter touches Clarices' hand when he gives her the notes back is almost emotional. That is the only time they make physical contact in the movie, yet it feels like they've loved each other forever. The pervertedness and gore is used very well. I am so glad that Silence of the Lambs didn't turn into some kind of a Scream slasher and it remained a true suspense thriller until the very end.
Oh, and Senator, just one more thing: love your suit!

This isn't a typical horror film but you'll feel so unsettling. Trust me.

The look on Hannibal's face makes it seem as if I am looking right in the devil's eyes. It's so terrifying. He is the best actor for that role. Ted Levin is just so god. Damn fine in this movie 😍. You didnt mention the greatest supporting role actor - Brent Hinkley, the sidler you can see him at @ 3:20. I could see it in Jodie's eyes she really convinced me that she's afraid because she's still a rookie agent. This film is a perfectly pleasant way to spend an raining afternoon. The film is engaging and fills the viewer with the requisite dread. Hannibal is a great monster. He conforms perfectly to the antihero archetype as he typifies the best qualities of humanity gone disastrously wrong. Hopkins chews scenery with the best of them. Clarice, especially in Foster's hands, is a strong character with buried psychological trauma that is fighting to get out. The interplay the two characters stands apart from the rest of the film.
Part of the reason for that is the rest of it so much worse than the leads. Of note, Buffalo Bill's villainy is steeped in lazy cultural tropes. The screenplay bothering to distinguish between Bill and a "real" transsexual does not make it any less lazy to othering a male villain by feminizing him. The bread crumbs of the mystery are likewise rote and basic. A moth is used as a symbol of transformation! Riveting! LAMBS!
This is genre film that has been treated way too seriously. This is something of a bad joke.
